Low vision and E-Readers

Do you or someone you know have low vision?  If so, an e-reader may be a very useful thing to have.

In my practice and clinical experience I have noticed many of my low vision patients raving over their new kindle or nook reader.  The contrast is very good and they can easily enlarge the font.  Many libraries now carry books for e-readers too.  This might make a nice gift for someone you love.

Dr Kotecha

How to choose safe Holiday toys.

Many emergency room injuries occur from children toys and games.

This holiday make sure to choos age appropriate toys and preferrably ones that are nonprojectile.

If your child desires to play with such toys or more athletic sports, consider getting them a pair of polycarbonate/safety or "recspec" glasses to protecth their eyes.  You will be glad you did.

Dry Eyes and Travelling

If you suffer from dry eye syndrome, make sure to protect yourself when travelling this summer.

Point air conditioning vents away from your face when in the car.

Make sure not to wear contact lenses on airplanes and make sure to carry on a bottle of tear drops.  Air plane cabins can be extremely dry.

Enjoy your summer!

Happy Safe 4th of July!

Make sure to keep all firecrackers safe and away from one's eyes.

Wishing all of you a happy and safe holiday!

June is Cataract Awareness Month

Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world. There are close to 22.3 million Americans age 40 and older with cataracts. More than half of all Americans will have cataracts by age 80.  If you or someone you know is experiencing problems with your vision, make sure to get your eyes checked today.  Cataracts may be cured by surgery.

Vitamins and the Eyes

A few years ago the AREDS study was launched.  This study proved that taking certain vitamins can reduce the progression of macular degeneration.  These vitamins include Zinc and antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Vitamin  E and Beta Carotene.

If you or someone you know has macular degeneration please see your eye care specialist to discuss what forms of vitamins would be best for him or her.

May is Healthy Eye Care Month

Please take time this month to schedule an eye exam if you have not done so in a while.

Many eye diseases such as glaucoma do not become symptomatic until it is often too late.

In honor of this month, we would like to offer to all uninsured patients a 10% discount on an eye screening exam when you mention our website.

Why do eyes need to be dilated for an eye exam?

Eyes don't have to be dilated for an eye exam, however it is often recommended.  Dilating the eyes makes it easier for the ophthalmologist to see the back of the eye and to check for things like glaucoma, diabetic or hypertesive retinopathy, macular problems including degeneration, and peripheral retinal problems such as tears or thinning.   There are other ways to do an eye exam if you really prefer not to be dilated such as looking through an undilated pupil or using cameras to take photos of the retina, however the do not allow for as complete and thorough an exam as

April is Sports Eye Safety Month

Many of us don't think about protecting our eyes when we play sports.  Now as the weather is improving it is time to start thinking about safety eyewear.  Rec specs are goggle type glasses that are very useful for protecting the eyes when playing sports.  Glasses made with polycarbonate lenses available at most opticals are about 100x more impact resistant than plastic lenses.  Do not wear contacts when swimming as this can significantly increase the risk of developing serious fungal and corneal infections.  Many swim specialty shops carry prescription goggles that

Cherry Blossoms are here again... along with red, itchy, watery eyes!

Allergy season is here again.  I just wanted to remind readers not to use Visine, Clear Eyes, or get the red out drops on a daily basis.  These eye drops are fine for occasional use.  However, used daily they can lead to dryness and rebound hyperemia (this means the redness will return worse than it was before you started using these drops.)  If eyes are itchy on a daily basis, one can cool compresses, lubricant eye drops, or antihistamine eye drops.

March is Eye Safety Month

Now is the time to think about how valuable your eyes are and steps that you should take to protect them.

  1. Always wear protective eyewear when doing construction or lab work.
  2. Do not sleep in or overwear contact lenses.  Doing so dramatically increases your risks for serious corneal infections as well as eye redness and discomfort.
  3. Make sure to schedule a yearly eye exam with your eye professional.

Taking these measures will help ensure safe and healthy eyes for years to come:).

Crusty Eyes in the Morning??? Is this normal?

I have many patients come in complaining of crusty eyes in the morning.  They feel that this is normal.  While it is quite common, you do not have to suffer with this problem.  It is a sign of a syndrome called blepharitis.  This is caused by a build up of oils produced by the glands on the lid margin that can lead to red, irritated, and dry eyes.

If you suffer from this problem your ophthalmologist can teach you how to clean your eyelids and recommend drops for you to take to help alleviate your symptoms.

November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month

Approximately 29 million Americans have diabetes and almost one third are at risk of vision loss because they do not know they have the disease.  Yearly dilated eye exams are crucial for protecting vision in people with diabetes.  Keeping your blood sugars well controlled will minimize your risks from diabetic eye complications.  High blood sugars can damage the blood vessels in the retina, which can lead t

Computer Eye Syndrome - Do you have it??

Computer eye syndrome is a very common problem that results from sitting for long hours looking at a computer terminal and results in dry and fatigued eyes, partly due to a decreased rate of blinking.  There are several things that can be done to treat and prevent it.  First be sure to take frequent breaks from the computer.  Second try lowering the height of the computer screen equal to or slightly below eye level.  Third, schedule a comprehensive eye exam to make sure one's eyeglass or contact lens rx is accurate.  Finally consider trying some over the counter art

Omega Oils - good for the eyes

Did you know that a diet rich in Omega 3 fatty acids may reduce ones chances of developing macular degeration and also reduce the incidence of dry eyes?

Allergy Season is Here! ... and here is what to do

As the beutiful cherry blossoms infamous to DC and other greenery is in abundance, many of us are suffering with itchy watery, red eyes and lots of sneezing.  A few simple things that one can do to decrease ocular allergens is to try to substitute eye rubbing with cool water rinses or compresses done with cool water and a clean wash cloth.  Another thing that one can do is rinse the eyes out with artificial tears available over the counter such as Refresh or Systane.  These will lubricate and soothe the eyes and wash allergens away.  Try to avoid frequent use of Visine o

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month

Glaucoma is an eye disease caused by high eye pressures that slowly causes one to lose their peripheral vision.  It can lead to blindness if undetected and untreated.  It may go undiagnosed without routine eye exams.  With early detection, monitoring and treatment often with glaucoma drops, vision is preserved and rarely lost.  Please make sure that you and your loved ones get screened for glaucoma now.
