Marijuana Use for Glaucoma

Many patients have asked me does marijuana work for glaucoma treatment?


Some research conducted in the 1970's showed that marijuana causes a temporary reduction in intraocular pressures.  However, the research does not show marijuana to be as effective as the current legal glaucoma medications.


The American Academy of Ophthalmology says the risky side effects of marijuana (such as lowered blood pressure, increased heart rate, poor pregnancy outcomes, poor motor coordination, increased risk of infections, impaired memory and increased risk of cancer and emphysema) far outweigh any benefit.
