Fillers and Botox are both popular choices to reduce visible signs of aging. Each have their advantages, and different patients can benefit from different treatments.

Who benefits from fillers?

Fillers are a great option for those who want fuller, plumper skin. They reduce the appearance of wrinkles by adding volume back to the face. They are also used to plump lips, cheeks, and other areas of the face that a patient wishes to emphasize.

What types of fillers are there? What do they do?

Fillers come in several types. You may have heard of brand names such as Juvederm or Radisse. Each of these options works in a slightly different way.

  • Juvederm/Hyaluronic acid: These fillers are made from a natural sugar. They provide an immediate result that lasts for several months. These fillers can be dissolved if a different look is desired.

  • Radisse: This type of filler stimulates natural collagen production. It provides a long term result that can last for over a year. This sort of filler cannot be dissolved instantly.

What is Botox?

Botox is a medication used to treat facial spasms and excess sweating. It is also used to treat migraines, particularly if traditional treatments have been ineffective. It is also used off label to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Advantages and disadvantages of Botox

Botox is a cost-effective way to smooth wrinkles. If in the hands of an experienced doctor it can provide natural results. Some patients may use Botox to reduce progression of lines before they are very noticeable.

Botox does not last as long as many types of fillers. This is both an advantage, allowing continual tweaking, and precision treatment of problem areas, and a disadvantage, as more frequent treatments are required.

The best way to know which treatment is for you is to have a consultation with an experienced provider!
